On a summer morning in Seoul two years ago, Yoon Gap-yeon, an 81-year-old woman who lives by herself, collapsed just at the threshold of her front door.

2년 전 여름 어느 아침, 서울에서 홀로 사는 81세 여성 윤갑연씨는 현관 문 앞에서 쓰러졌다.

After that, she remembers little.

그 다음은 기억이 거의 없다.

She lay alone on the floor of her basement home for roughly half an hour — long enough, in the heat, that the outcome could easily have been different.

윤씨는 반지하 집 바닥에 홀로 약 30분간 누워 있었다. 더운 날씨 속에서 자칫하면 돌이킬 수 없는 상황으로 이어질 수 있었던 시간이었다.

Fortunately, her Yakult delivery woman arrived — one of Korea's roughly 11,000 “fresh managers,” women who deliver chilled probiotic drinks door to door on electric carts.

다행히 그때 야쿠르트 배달원이 도착했다. 그는 전동 카트를 타고 집집마다 냉장 유산균 음료를 배달하는 한국의 ‘프레시 매니저’ 1만1000명 중 한 명이었다.

“She said, ‘What's wrong?’ I could hear her, but I couldn't respond,” Yoon told the Korea JoongAng Daily last week.

윤시는 “‘할머니, 왜 이렇게 있어요?’하는 건 들렸는데, 대답을 할 수가 없었다”고 지난주 코리아중앙데일리에 말했다.

The manager ran to find a pharmacy, returned with medicine, came back that evening with porridge, and later helped connect Yoon to her local community center for welfare support.

매니저는 근처 약국으로 달려가 약을 지어왔고, 저녁엔 죽을 들고 다시 찾아왔다. 이후 윤씨가 주민센터 복지 서비스와 연결될 수 있도록 도움을 주기도 했다.

“If she hadn't come when she did, I don't know what would have happened to me,” Yoon said.

“그때 그분이 오지 않았다면 어떻게 됐을지 모르겠다”고 윤 씨가 말했다.

Korea has one of the world's fastest-aging populations. Nearly two million Koreans aged 65 and older live alone, equal to one in five seniors.

한국은 세계에서 가장 빠르게 고령화가 진행되는 나라 중 하나다. 65세 이상 한국인 가운데 홀로 사는 사람은 거의 200만명에 달하며, 이는 노인 5명 중 1명꼴이다.

Last year, a record 3,924 died in isolation, their deaths undiscovered for days or longer. A survey by the Seoul Institute found that 62.1 percent of people living alone report feeling lonely; 13.6 percent have no one to rely on at all.

2024년 고독사 사망자는 3924명으로 역대 최다를 기록했다. 숨진 지 며칠이 지나서야 발견된 사례도 적지 않다. 서울연구원 조사에선 1인 가구의 62.1%가 외로움을 느낀다고 답했고, 13.6%는 의지할 사람이 전혀 없는 것으로 나타났다.

Yoon lives alone in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul. Intestinal surgery years earlier had left her weighing 41 kilograms (90 lbs) and unable to eat most ordinary foods. Her son lives in Ulsan, a five-hour drive away, and visits when he can.

윤씨는 서울 광진구에 혼자 살고 있다. 수년 전 장 수술 후 몸무게가 41kg으로 줄었고, 일반식을 거의 먹지 못한다. 아들은 차로 5시간 거리인 울산에 살며 가끔 찾아온다.
