Korean stocks opened higher on Friday, bucking overnight losses on Wall Street, as the United States announced a three-week cease-fire extension for Iran and Lebanon.
The benchmark Kospi opened at 6,496.10, up 20.29 points, or 0.31 percent, compared to the previous trading session.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.36 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined 0.89 percent.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he had ordered the U.S. Navy to target any vessels laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He added that Iran is seeking a deal and that talks are underway.
Trump also said that Israel and Lebanon would extend their cease-fire by three weeks, easing a potential obstacle to efforts to end the conflict involving the United States and Iran.
