In early March, six massive U.S. military trucks rolled out of Seongju, North Gyeongsang, bound for Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek before being deployed to the Middle East.

3월 초, 대형 미군 군용 트럭 6대가 경북 성주를 떠나 평택 오산공군기지로 향했고 이후 중동에 배치됐다.

The trucks carried a critical piece in Korea’s security umbrella: Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) launchers, with each vehicle packed with eight interceptor missiles previously tasked with guarding the country's skies.

이 트럭은 한국 안보 우산의 핵심 축인 고고도미사일방어체계(THAAD·사드) 발사대를 실고 있었다. 각 차량에는 그동안 한국 영공 방어 임무를 맡아온 요격미사일 8기가 탑재돼 있었다.

While two vehicles have reportedly returned since, redeployment to the Middle East marked the first overseas transfer of Korea-based Thaad interceptors since the system’s arrival in the country in 2017.

이후 트럭 두 대가 돌아온 것으로 알려졌으나, 이번 중동 재배치는 2017년 사드 체계가 한국에 도입된 이후 사드 요격 미사일이 해외로 이동한 첫 사례로 기록됐다.

With no end in sight for the Iran war, the withdrawal has sparked speculation, nay panic, that Korea’s missile defense could be critically compromised by the vacuum created by Thaad’s departure.

이란 전쟁이 끝날 기미를 보이지 않는 가운데, 이번 철수는 사드 이탈로 생긴 공백으로 인해 한국의 미사일 방어망이 심각하게 훼손될 수 있다는 추측, 심지어 공포를 불러일으켰다.

While the departure of the American missile shield is a setback for the peninsula's defense capabilities, experts say the effects are limited given alternative defensive solutions.

미국의 미사일 방어막 이탈은 한반도 방어 역량에 차질을 빚는 일이지만, 전문가들은 대체 방어 수단이 있다는 점을 고려할 때 영향은 제한적이라고 말한다.

Instead, this opportunity should be used to fast-track indigenous weapons and solidify its dominance in the global export market.

오히려 이를 계기로 국산 무기 개발을 앞당기고, 글로벌 수출 시장에서의 우위를 공고히해야 한다는 지적도 나온다.

“It is true that Korea's missile defense has been weakened — we’ve lost one defense system, and we have fewer intercepting missiles,” Jung Kyeong-woon, a senior researcher at the Korea Research Institute for Strategy, told the Korea JoongAng Daily. “But it would be an exaggeration to conclude that the country is in grave danger and open to attacks.”

정경운 한국전략문제연구소 수석연구원은 방어 체계 하나를 잃었고 요격 미사일 수도 줄었으니 한국 미사일 방어망이 약화된 것은 사실이라면서도 “국가가 심각한 위험에 처해 공격에 노출됐다고 결론짓는 것은 과장” 이라고 말했다.

The anxiety in Seoul is not entirely without merit, especially with Washington being less-than-forthcoming about the Thaad relocation.

미국이 사드 재배치와 관련해 충분한 설명을 내놓지 않고 있는 상황에서, 한국의 불안이 전혀 근거 없는 것은 아니다.

When asked by U.S. lawmakers about the sudden withdrawal of Thaad from Korea, Pentagon officials appeared to dodge their questions. Defense Department officials also avoided giving clear answers on how long the Thaad relocation will last and whether Thaad missiles would be replenished in Korea.

미 국방부 관계자들은 한국에서 갑작스럽게 사드를 철수시킨 일에 대한 미 의원들의 질문을 회피하는 듯한 모습을 보였다. 이들은 또 사드 재배치가 얼마나 지속될지, 한국에 미사일이 다시 보충될지에 대해서도 명확한 답변을 피했다.

The diplomatic ambiguity and lack of clear answers fueled the fears of a security vacuum in Korea. However, while concerns are justified, military strategists view the Thaad withdrawal as an unavoidable military expediency — at least for the United States.

외교적 모호성과 명확한 설명 부재는 안보 공백에 대한 한국의 두려움을 키웠다. 이런 우려는 당연한 측면이 있지만, 군사 전략가들은 이번 사드 철수가 적어도 미국의 입장에서는 불가피한 군사적 선택이었다고 본다.
