SK hynix decided on Tuesday to purchase advanced production equipment worth 12 trillion won ($7.9 billion) from the Netherlands-based ASML, in line with efforts to address growing demand for memory chips.
The Korean chipmaker announced the decision through a regulatory filing, noting that the equipment, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scanners, will be delivered by December 2027 for its next-generation production processes.
The move comes amid SK hynix's push to expand the production of memory chips, including high bandwidth memory, on the back of soaring demand from the AI industry.
SK hynix plans to accelerate the transition to sixth-generation process technology using the new EUV scanners to expand its AI-related memory portfolio.
"We aim to respond to soaring global memory demand and solidify our leadership in the market," an SK hynix representative said.
