Seoul National University Hospital announced on Thursday that liberal Democratic Party (DP) leader Lee Jae-myung is recovering "smoothly" after undergoing surgery for a stab wound he sustained in a knifing two days prior.

서울대병원은 목요일 (1월 4일) 이재명 더불어민주당 대표가 이틀 전 흉기 피습으로 인해 생긴 자상에 대한 수술을 마치고 순조롭게 회복 중이라고 밝혔다.
Min Seung-kee, the surgeon from the hospital's vascular surgery department who operated on Lee, told reporters during a press briefing that the DP leader suffered “a stab wound about 1.4 centimeters (0.55 inches) above his left sternocleidomastoid muscle, also known as the neck muscle.”

민승기 서울대병원 이식혈관외과 교수는 “이 대표가 왼쪽 흉쇄유돌근이라고 불리는 목 근육 위를 칼로 찔려 1.4cm 자상이 있었다”라고 브리핑에서 말했다.
He added that the knife used by Lee’s assailant “penetrated the neck muscle and sliced around 60 percent of the vein inside,” resulting in a significant amount of blood clotting. However, the surgeon said there was no damage to the brachial artery, surrounding nerves, esophagus or airway.

민 교수는 “속목정맥 앞부분의 전체 둘레 60% 정도가 예리하게 잘렸다”라며 상당한 양의 피떡이 고여 있었다고 전했다. 하지만 그는 속목동맥 손상이나 근처 신경, 식도, 기도 손상은 없었다고 덧붙였다.
“We conducted sufficient irrigation to prevent secondary infections and vascular reconstruction surgery, making primary repairs to the punctured superficial brachial vein,” the surgeon said, adding that the stitches were about 9 millimeters long.

민 교수는 “2차 감염이 우려돼 충분히 세척을 진행했고 찢어진 속목정맥을 1차 봉합해 혈관 재건 수술을 시행했다” 면서 “꿰맨 길이는 약 9mm”라고 전했다.
Min said the medical team also removed all blood clots from the neck muscle, clipped the area, and sealed the wound after thorough cleansing, and that the operation lasted an hour and 40 minutes from 4:20 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 2.

민 교수에 따르면 서울대병원 의료팀은 목 근육의 피떡을 다 제거하고 잘린 곳은 클립으로 묶어 접착하고 세척한 뒤 상처를 봉합했다고 말했다. 수술은 1월 2일 오후 4시20분부터 오후 6시까지 1시간 40분 가량 이뤄졌다고 덧붙였다.
The surgeon noted that Seoul National University Hospital agreed to perform the surgery on Lee upon receiving a request from Pusan National University Hospital, where Lee was originally admitted after his attack in Busan. He also noted reconstructive surgery on neck veins or arteries is highly demanding.

민 교수는 서울대병원은 이 대표가 피습당했던 부산에 위치한 부산대병원의 요청을 받아들여 수술을 진행했다고 말했다. 민 교수는 목정맥 혈관 재건술은 난이도가 높은 수술이라고 강조했다.
“Success was difficult to guarantee, even if the surgery had been successful,” Min said, adding that surgery by an experienced vascular surgeon “was absolutely necessary” in Lee’s case. The surgeon said that potential complications from the surgery had necessitated Lee’s stay in the hospital’s intensive care unit for close monitoring until the risk of further blood clotting and infection had subsided.

특히 이 대표의 경우는 수술을 무사히 마친다고 해도 성공을 장담하기 어려운 상태였고, 경험 많은 혈관외과 의사의 수술이 꼭 필요했던 상황이라고 말했다. 그러면서 수술 후 합병증 가능성으로 인해 혈전 발생과 감염 위험이 가라앉을 때까지 면밀히 모니터링 할 필요가 있어 이 대표를 중환자실에 입원시켰다고 말했다.
In response to questions about why the hospital had not held its official press briefing earlier, Min said that the hospital needed to seek Lee’s consent beforehand and that “the patient’s stability was a priority.” The surgeon added that the DP leader gave his consent to the hospital to hold a press briefing as he began to recover.

서울대병원 측이 앞서 브리핑을 통해 이 대표의 상태를 밝히지 않은 이유를 묻는 질문에 민 교수는 이 대표의 동의가 필요했고, 무엇보다 환자의 안정이 최우선이었기 때문이었다고 말했다. 이어 이 대표가 회복하면서 동의를 했고 이후 브리핑을 계획하게 됐다고 전했다.
The Busan District Court on Thursday approved the prosecutors’ request for an arrest warrant for the suspect in Lee’s stabbing on charges of attempted murder.
