Hana Bank is expanding its push into Vietnam, signing a trilateral cooperation deal and launching a cross-border QR payment service for Korean tourists.
The bank on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation at the Korea-Vietnam Business Forum in Hanoi to build strategic partnerships in infrastructure, energy, urban development and green sectors.
It is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility within Vietnam’s financial ecosystem by expanding the foundation for economic cooperation between Korea and Vietnam.
The three institutions plan to further expand public-private cooperation, jointly identifying high-quality investment opportunities to support Korean companies entering the Vietnamese market, according to Hana Bank.
The bank, on the same day, launched a QR payment service for Korean tourists visiting Vietnam, developed in partnership with BIDV and Vietnam's national payment corporation NAPAS and Hana's fintech subsidiary GLN International.
Under the arrangement, GLN will directly handle payment operations linked to Vietnam’s national QR payment network and, together with Hana Bank, lead the development of local QR payment infrastructure.
The service allows Korean travelers to make payments at merchants across major tourist destinations — including Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City — using Korean banking and fintech apps, without the need to exchange currency or install local applications.
GLN’s Vietnam QR payment service is currently available on major platforms such as Hana Bank, Hana Card, Hana Money, Toss and PurpleGLN, with plans to expand to Naver Pay and other domestic banking apps.
To mark the launch, Hana Bank and GLN said it is offering a 5 percent cashback promotion on QR payments at Lotte Mart and Kingkong Mart locations in Vietnam through May 31.
“This agreement and service launch will create meaningful value by combining Vietnam’s growth potential with Hana Bank’s global financial capabilities,” said Lee Ho-sung, CEO of Hana Bank. The bank will “continue to provide convenient and reliable financial services while advancing our global payment network through a strategy that integrates infrastructure finance and digital payments.”
