The Gijisi Tug-of-War Festival is held at the Gijisi Tug-of-War Museum site in Gijisi-ri, Songak-eup, Dangjin, South Chungcheong, on April 12. Listed as a Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the festival dates back about 500 years and is held to ward off disasters and pray for peace and a good harvest. Rooted in Joseon-era (1392-1910) traditions, residents gather to perform rituals and pull a giant rope. About 10,000 participants joined the main event, pulling the rope from the east and west sides.
