Singer Hwasa is returning with a softer, more introspective sound in her new digital single “So Cute,” according to her agency P Nation on Thursday.

The single, due to be released at 6 p.m. Thursday, marks her first release since megahit “Good Goodbye” (2025) six months ago.

Teaser images ahead of the release hint at a shift in tone. In one image, Hwasa appears blank-faced wearing a birthday hat and a white bralette, while in another, she appears to be gazing longingly at viewers with a single, small flower on her cheek.

Based on snippets from the music video teaser, “So Cute” is a light dance-pop track. Hwasa cowrote the lyrics with Psy, the head of her agency, while teaming up again with composer Park Woo-sang for the music.

Hwasa said the song was driven by a desire to return fan support following the success of “Good Goodbye,” which became the biggest hit of her solo career. The singer started out as a member of girl group Mamamoo.

“The things that give us strength in our everyday lives are small and trivial forms of cuteness,” she said in her agency’s press release. “Even if they seem insignificant, they can melt a frozen heart. Happiness isn’t anything complicated.”

The singer described the track as a departure from her typically intense musical themes, reflecting a growing desire to express quieter, more personal thoughts.

“I think I’ve only told strong, intense stories so far, and I felt some fatigue from that,” she said. “These days, I wanted to talk about my quieter thoughts.”

Hwasa contributed to both the lyrics and composition, saying the song originated from a sense of fear that comes with growing older.

“As you age, you come to know more things, but sometimes that brings a childlike fear,” she said. “I wanted to express moving forward through that confusion with a small, cute ray of light.”

Despite the pressure that might follow a record-setting hit such as “Good Goodbye,” Hwasa said she didn’t feel pressure.

“A song like that can’t be made twice,” she said. “I’m grateful I was able to make it. For this next chapter, I’m starting again from zero.”

Looking ahead, Hwasa said she hopes the new release, like its title suggests, can offer simple comfort.

“I don’t have a specific goal,” she said. “I just hope this small, cute song can give strength to many people.”
