The Hanwha Eagles said Wednesday their new American pitcher Owen White will be sidelined for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Eagles said White tore his left hamstring during his KBO regular-season debut on Tuesday against the KT Wiz.
With a runner at first in the top of the third inning, White induced a ground ball to first baseman Chae Eun-seong, who threw to shortstop Sim Woo-jun to start a double play.
White sprinted to cover first base and did a split to catch a throw from Sim. The throw was late, and White came up limping.
White went down on all fours in obvious pain and later left the field with the help of team trainers. The right-hander had allowed a run on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
In three preseason outings in March, White gave up five runs on 14 hits in 14 1/3 innings, while recording 16 strikeouts against two walks.
The Eagles signed White and another new starter, Wilkel Hernandez, in the offseason to replace their two dominant aces from last season, Cody Ponce and Ryan Weiss, who became the first pair of teammates in KBO history to each record more than 200 strikeouts in the same season.
KBO teams are allowed to sign temporary replacements for injured foreign players to six-week contracts.
