HD Hyundai, Siemens open Busan center to build digital shipyard platform
The Global Marine Center will develop a next-generation platform that uses AI and other technology to combine data from the entire ship life cycle — including ship design, production, supply chain management, quality control and maintenance — into a 3-D model.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) opened a center in Busan with German technology company Siemens to develop a platform that integrates shipbuilding process data and runs it in a virtual environment to cut shipbuilding time.
The company said on Tuesday that it held an opening ceremony for the Global Marine Center in Haeundae District. HD KSOE CEO Kim Hyung-kwan and Siemens Chief Revenue Officer for Software Robert Jones attended, along with other executives and representatives from both companies.
The center will develop a next-generation marine platform that uses AI and other technology to combine data from the entire ship life cycle — including ship design, production, supply chain management, quality control and maintenance — into a 3-D model.
As part of the partnership, the two companies will also build a digital shipyard in which production processes and equipment operations can be tested virtually in advance.
The Global Marine Center will employ 50 specialists from both companies, covering ship production, hull design, electrical structures, piping, cabin systems, AI platforms and product life cycle management.
HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center in Pangyo, Gyeonggi, will provide the platform’s technology strategy and core technologies. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard and HD Hyundai Samho’s Yeongam shipyard in Jeonnam-Gwangju will test its functions and efficiency to reduce risks when it is eventually applied on site.
HD KSOE and Siemens signed the contract for the platform in July.
“The next-generation marine platform will play a key role in raising shipyard productivity and competitiveness by verifying the entire ship design and production process in a digital environment in advance,” HD KSOE CEO Kim said.
“Around the Global Marine Center, we plan to combine HD Hyundai’s accumulated shipbuilding expertise with Siemens’ digital capabilities to accelerate the realization of a next-generation intelligent shipyard.”
