Oil refining company S-Oil reiterated its continued dedication to innovation and the completion of its Shaheen project on its 50th anniversary.

“The year 2026 is full of milestones as it is not only S-Oil’s 50th anniversary but also the year that our efforts for the Shaheen project will finally pay off,” said Anwar A. Al-Hejazi, the CEO of S-Oil, in a statement on Monday. “We will use our 50 years of experience to continue to grow as an innovative and trustworthy energy company for 50 more years.”

Founded in 1976, the company has established itself as one of the biggest oil refineries and petrochemical companies in Korea through its continuous investments in innovation.

During the past 10 years, the petrochemical giant has invested over 14 trillion won ($9.08 billion) to diversify its portfolio towards sustainable growth amid the global industry drive toward carbon neutrality, according to the company.

One example is the Shaheen project, which focuses on expanding the company’s petrochemical complex in Ulsan. The megaproject boasts a 9.26 trillion won investment, the largest in Korea's petrochemical industry, and is expected to increase production capacity and reduce carbon emissions when it is completed later this year.

Over the past decade, S-Oil has also expanded its focus beyond refining to include chemicals through its Residue Upgrading Complex and the Olefin Downstream Complex project in 2018.

“We are using our 50 year anniversary as a new starting point for our next chapter,” said Ryu Yeol, the president of Corporate Strategy & Services at S-Oil. “We are pursuing expansion of the petrochemical business centered around the Shaheen Project and sustainable growth fueled by increased energy efficiency, reduced carbon emission and increased AI-based business innovation.”
