PPP ignores voters’ call for conservative renewal (KOR)
Internal criticism of PPP chief Jang Dong-hyeok underscores voter demands for accountability and conservative renewal after the party’s local election losses.
A dispute over the future of People Power Party (PPP) leader Jang Dong-hyeok resurfaced at the party’s Supreme Council meeting on Monday.
Supreme Council member Yang Hyang-ja argued that most voters and party supporters had expected the entire leadership to resign after the PPP’s poor showing in the June 3 local elections. She called the current leadership a “zombie leadership” lacking the vision and direction needed to rebuild the conservative party.
Jang rejected the criticism, saying it insulted voters who continued to support the PPP.
Party leaders have dismissed calls for accountability, citing a recent poll showing PPP support at 44.3 percent, ahead of the Democratic Party’s 38 percent. They have also pointed to public anger over the National Election Commission’s mishandling of the ballot-shortage controversy.
Yet less than two weeks have passed since the PPP lost the gubernatorial and mayoral races by a margin of 12 to four. The leadership appears to have already forgotten the message delivered by voters.
Although the party retained several conservative strongholds, criticism emerged even within its ranks. Some members remarked that victories came mainly in areas where Jang played little role.
In reality, neither camp emerged as a true winner.
Voters sought to check what they viewed as arrogance and unilateral decision-making by President Lee Jae Myung’s administration and the ruling Democratic Party (DP). At the same time, they demanded renewal from the main conservative opposition, which has struggled to distance itself from the legacy of martial law and internal division.
The recent decline in support for President Lee and the DP also reflects disappointment among voters who believe the ruling camp has focused too heavily on political maneuvering.
Against that backdrop, Jang’s attempt to connect public anger over violations of voting rights with election-fraud allegations and rising PPP support appears self-serving.
Several younger PPP lawmakers warned against turning legitimate concerns over ballot shortages into election-fraud conspiracy theories. Their calls for Jang’s resignation reflected concern that the party was misreading public sentiment.
Having received a clear message demanding conservative renewal, the PPP risks appearing evasive if it relies on calls for revotes or conspiracy theories to avoid responsibility for its defeat.
Public demands for transparent election management are aimed at restoring confidence in democratic participation. Using that frustration as a tool for political survival distorts the meaning of the vote and ultimately disrespects voters.
