![Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) interceptors at their base on a former golf course in Seongju, North Gyeongsang on Thursday. A joint assessment released Wednesday by the Defense and Environment ministries as well as third-party experts, including the Korea Radio Promotion Association, found that the environmental impact of Thaad was negligible, with a maximum level of electromagnetic radiation that was just 0.2 percent of safety standards. Opponents of the missiles, including figures in the Democratic Party, claimed that electromagnetic radiation from the system was environmentally hazardous, with some likening it to sitting in a microwave. Critics had also claimed that electromagnetic radiation from Thaad's radar would render the region's famous melons inedible.
