Chung Mong-gyu officially stepped down as the president of the Korea Football Association (KFA) on Monday.

He had originally been expected to resign after the FIFA World Cup 2026 concluded. However, that timeline moved up after Korea was eliminated in the group stage of the tournament on June 28 — much earlier than expected — leading to calls for new leadership.

Chung left the organization roughly 13 years and five months after he was first elected as the 52nd KFA president on Jan. 28, 2013.

“While carrying the heavy responsibility of KFA president, I worked only toward the development and glory of Korean football. At times I met your expectations, and at times I caused you deep disappointment,” he said in a statement.

“I now step down from the presidency and return to being a passionate football fan,” he continued. “I am confident that Korean football will, as it always has, rise again to new heights after overcoming countless trials.”

As per Article 23 of the KFA’s charter, one of the vice presidents will serve as the acting president, following approval from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. The association plans to prepare for a presidential election under the acting president.
