The naval clash, fought near the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea in 1999, was one of several inter-Korean military confrontations in the disputed waters. The area has since seen repeated clashes, including the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong in 2002, the Battle of Daecheong in 2009 and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010.
