Kospi surpasses 7,000 points for new historic high

The benchmark Kospi surpassed the 7,000-point mark Wednesday, a new historic high for Korea’s stock market.
The Kospi stood at 7,274.87, up 337.88 points, or 4.87 percent, from the previous session, at 9:12 a.m.
The index opened at 7,093.01, up 156.02 points, or 2.25 percent, from the previous close.
This increase comes just two months after the benchmark index passed 6,000 points for the first time on Feb. 25.
The Kospi 200 futures index also soared to 1,116.55 at around 9 a.m., up 66.05 points, or 6.28 percent, from the previous session’s close, triggering a five-minute suspension of program buy orders, or sidecar, at around 9:06 a.m., according to the Korea Exchange.
This marks the first sidecar activation on the Kospi in about a month, since April 8.
Meanwhile, the Kosdaq was at 1,206.08 at the same time, down 7.66 points, or 0.63 percent, from the previous session.
