With two months left until the annual World Heritage Committee meeting in July, an inspection team from Unesco has completed the second round of pre-event observation, according to the Korea Heritage Service on Monday.
The four-member inspection team visited the event venue, Bexco, a convention center in Busan, from April 27 to Thursday to fine-tune the room arrangements. The organizers looked out for safety issues as well with the police, fire authorities, terror response team and United Nations Department for Safety and Security in attendance.
Busan was chosen as the host of the 48th session of the 2026 World Heritage Committee set to run from July 19 to 29. It is being held in Korea for the first time.
During the inspection visit, the organizers discussed the administrative processes, including visa issuance, accommodation, participant registration and the scheduled opening and closing ceremonies.
The World Heritage Committee is the primary decision-making body on matters related to the World Heritage Convention, overseeing the inscription, conservation and protection of World Heritage sites. The annual event is attended by the Unesco Director-General and delegations from the convention’s 196 States Parties.

Busan is Korea's second-largest city after Seoul.
The local government is reportedly eyeing to expand domestic and international networks to support the inscription of the Sites of the Busan Wartime Capital on Unesco's World Heritage list. The nomination comprises 11 key sites in Busan from the Korean War (1950-1953), including the temporary government complex, U.S. Embassy and Ami-dong Tombstone Culture Village.
Busan served as the country's temporary capital during the wartime evacuation, maintaining government functions, facilitating international cooperation and accommodating displaced civilians.
