A man who assaulted a passerby while shouting that he “hates Chinese people” has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
He was indicted for kicking the door of the driver’s side of a Chinese resident’s truck with safety shoes on June 27 last year after he was angered by the person talking on the phone in front of a restaurant.
According to investigators, the man was intoxicated at the time. When the victim tried to stop him, he grabbed them by the collar, shouted, “Go back to your country,” and physically assaulted them.
In a separate incident in October last year, he kicked a no-parking rubber cone set up on a street in Cheongju. When another passerby confronted him, he picked up a stone and threatened the individual before headbutting them in the face.
On Saturday, Judge Lim Jin-su of the Cheongju District Court’s criminal division two sentenced the man to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years. He was also ordered to undergo three years of probation and complete 200 hours of community service.
“The nature of the crime is serious, as he committed these acts without any particular reason despite having no relationship with the victim,” the judge said. “However, the sentence reflects the fact that he admitted to all charges and that the level of violence was not severe.”
