A parliamentary committee on Monday adopted a confirmation hearing report for Bank of Korea (BOK) Governor-designate Shin Hyun-song, clearing the way for his official appointment.
The National Assembly's Finance, Economy, Planning and Budget Committee made the decision following Shin's confirmation hearing last Wednesday, during which he faced scrutiny over allegations involving his family.
Opposition lawmakers had taken issue with allegations that Shin's daughter, a British national, was illegally reissued a Korean passport.
"Many committee members shared the view that there shouldn't be a vacuum in the Bank of Korea's governorship as the domestic and external economic conditions are severe," said Rep. Lim Lee-ja of the main opposition People Power Party, who heads the committee.
It marked the first time a confirmation hearing report for a BOK chief nominee was not adopted on the day of the hearing since 2014, when the position became subject to the appointment procedure.
Outgoing BOK Gov. Rhee Chang-yong completed his four-year term earlier in the day.
