The JCS said the unidentified missiles were launched from North Korea's Sinpo area at around 6:10 a.m.
The military said it is further analyzing the missiles.
The JCS said that the South Korean military has strengthened surveillance in preparation for further launches, and is closely sharing information regarding North Korean ballistic missile launches with the United States and Japan to maintain full readiness posture.
North Korea last launched short-range ballistic missiles on April 8. It also launched an unidentified projectile on April 7, which disappeared after showing abnormal signs early in its flight.
This launch marks the seventh ballistic missile launch this year.
