North Korea on Thursday condemned a recent United Nations resolution on human rights violations in the country, calling it a "grave political provocation."

The reaction came after the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council adopted its annual resolution on Pyongyang's human rights by consensus Monday at its 61st regular session, co-sponsored by 50 countries, including South Korea.

"[Our] foreign ministry regards the act of adopting a human rights resolution against our republic as a grave political provocation against our national dignity and sovereignty and condemns it with the strongest language," a ministry official said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Pyongyang also raised its threats against the 50 co-sponsoring countries, including South Korea, warning that their “malicious acts will surely be reckoned with.”

“The ‘human rights resolution’ fabricated by hostile forces is a politically motivated document that distorts and invents the reality of our human rights situation,” said the ministry.

North Korea, in particular, aimed at what it called Western “double standards,” referring to a recent incident in which many people were killed or wounded at an elementary school in Iran after a U.S. strike.

“It has become commonplace for children to die after becoming targets of precision-guided weapons,” said the ministry. “The foremost task facing the United Nations is to investigate state terrorism and crimes against humanity committed by hegemonic forces.”

The remarks appeared to fit Pyongyang’s strategy of criticizing Western military actions as a deflection from its own human rights record.
