Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said on Tuesday that he will focus on policy implementation, safety and the economy ahead of the June local elections.

Speaking to reporters at the government complex, Kim said these three issues have become particularly important as many local government chiefs prepare to run for election, creating a possible vacuum in the everyday operation of state affairs.

“Just when the economy was improving, the Iran situation suddenly happened, and there are lots of worries overall,” the prime minister said. “I think it's time for all ministries to carry out a form of emergency check on state affairs.”

Kim recalled his visit last week to an accident site in Anseong and stated that safety issues are at particular risk of being overlooked during election season.

He also said the war in the Middle East has led to an “emergency economic situation” that requires the government's close attention to the supply of daily necessities.
