SK On and Hyundai Motor announced the establishment of the JV in April 2023. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations within the year, and its construction is currently over 90 percent complete, according to informed sources.

The $5 billion facility, located in Bartow County, Georgia, will have an annual production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours, or enough to power around 300,000 EVs.

Battery cells produced at the plant will be supplied for battery packs produced by Hyundai Mobis, which will be used in EVs manufactured by Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis in the United States.

The plant is located near Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), Kia's Georgia factory and Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant, offering advantages in logistics management.

SK On currently supplies batteries for key Hyundai Motor Group models, including Hyundai's Ioniq 5, Kia's EV6 and EV9 and Genesis's GV60, with a further supply expansion expected with increased production at HMGMA.
