Bereaved families have begun funeral services for some of the 14 victims who died in a fire at an auto parts plant in Daejeon last week, city officials said on Tuesday.
The massive fire that broke out on Friday left 14 people dead and 60 injured. Authorities have so far identified 13 of the 14 victims who were killed.
Funeral services for four of the victims were set up as of Tuesday morning. Those for the remaining victims will be arranged once city officials finalize the details with their families.
The city government plans to cover the funeral service costs and provide other support measures, a city official said.
President Lee Jae Myung also addressed the incident during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
“I offer my condolences to the victims and extend my deepest sympathy to their families and those affected,” Lee said. “I ask relevant ministries to prepare careful support measures — including compensation, trauma care and other forms of assistance — for bereaved families. I also call for more thorough inspections of such high-risk workplaces.”
Police and labor authorities raided the auto parts factory's operator, Anjun Industrial, on Monday to seize records and check whether the company implemented proper safety measures.
