LG Electronics vows all-out effort to foster robot business in 2026

LG Electronics CEO Lyu Jae-cheol said Monday the company will begin producing its own actuators — a key robot component that accounts for about 40 percent of production costs — as it aims to expand its robotics business this year.

Lyu said at a shareholders’ meeting at LG Electronics’ office in Yeouido, western Seoul, that the company will spare no effort to grow its robotics business this year, highlighting the field as one where it can leverage its accumulated expertise in the era of artificial intelligence.

"Amid the expansion of the AI drive, we plan to focus on four key areas — robots, cooling solutions, smart factories and AI home — where LG Electronics holds distinctive capabilities and strong growth potential," he was quoted as saying.

"With technological advances in physical AI and the robot industry accelerating faster than expected, the company will designate this year as the beginning of full-scale implementation of the robot business and roll out detailed strategies promptly," Lyu added, according to the company.

Under the plan, LG Electronics will seek to produce its own actuators, a component that converts energy into physical motion, to enhance its business-to-business portfolio. The company aims to set up a mass production system within the year.

With its competitive manufacturing infrastructure, LG Electronics aims to emerge as a key actuator supplier in the global market, Lyu added.

The CEO noted that while AI and a reshuffle in the global supply chain have increased market uncertainties, such an environment presents an opportunity for LG Electronics to enhance "the quality of growth."

The company will continue efforts to reshape its portfolio based on business capabilities that can withstand external shocks, Lyu said.

Lyu, who was appointed CEO in a year-end executive reshuffle last year, was newly named an inside director on Monday.
