Busan announced Wednesday it opened an international student dormitory for Korea Maritime & Ocean University, with another dorm set to open next week.
The newly opened accommodation for international students was constructed from an abandoned house and is located in Cheonghak-dong in Yeongdo District, Busan. Standing on a 148-square-meter (1,593-square-feet) plot of land, the building can accommodate five students.
The dorm opened through an agreement between Busan, the city’s Yeongdo District and Korea Maritime & Ocean University in 2025, as part of Busan’s plan to repurpose buildings that have been left vacant for a long time.
Under the agreement, Busan is responsible for managing and financing the project, as well as purchasing the vacant buildings. Yeongdo District is responsible for remodeling the buildings, while the maritime university is in charge of managing the students living in the dorm and maintaining the facility.
An opening ceremony for the new international student accommodation will be held on Wednesday, with the maritime university's president, international students from the university and head of Yeongdo District in attendance.
Another international student accommodation will also open on March 20 as part of Busan's remodeling plan. The two-story building is located in Dongsam-dong in Yeongdo District, and can accommodate five students.
Like the Cheonghak-dong accommodation, the house will also be managed by Korea Maritime & Ocean University.
"The project is a meaningful case of how we can transform vacant houses into spaces for young international students, and revitalize our neighborhood," said Park Heong-joon, mayor of Busan. "We will continue to repurpose such vacant houses into spaces that our community needs, helping create a city where young people can stay and local neighborhoods can thrive.”
