SK Innovation has decided to invest $380 million in a U.S.-based arm of its sister firm, SK hynix, as part of efforts to seek investment opportunities in the AI energy infrastructure sector, a report showed on Tuesday.

According to the audit report of the Korean refiner, SK Innovation's board of directors approved a plan to invest in AI Co. last month.

Sky hynix announced the U.S. affiliate — which works to “secure opportunities in the emerging AI era” — in January.

According to SK hynix, the new subsidiary aims to become a key partner in the AI data center ecosystem and accelerate AI advancement in global markets, including the United States and Korea.

“We are considering acquiring a stake in AI Co. to explore various investment and business opportunities, including in the U.S. AI energy infrastructure sector,” a spokesperson from SK Innovation said.
