Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon did not apply for the main opposition People Power Party's (PPP) candidacy for the June local elections by the deadline, according to his aides.
Oh did not register as a PPP candidate for the Seoul mayorship in the June 3 local elections by the deadline, which was 6 p.m. on Sunday, as he thinks the party should prioritize severing ties with former President Yoon Suk Yeol ahead of the polls, according to his aides.
Oh has been calling for the party's leadership to shift the party's line to distance itself from Yoon, who is now in jail over his failed martial law attempt in December 2024.
“Mayor Oh has been emphasizing that [the PPP] can steer away from defeat and into victory by normalizing the party's priorities,” the Seoul government told reporters on Sunday.
“He still stands by that position and awaits the party leaders' response.”
The PPP is set to hold a meeting to discuss the party's agenda on Monday.
