March 3 marks Samgyeopsal Day in Korea, an unofficial day of celebration for the famed pork belly cut. This year, the government aims to help more people join the celebration by offering discounts.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has rolled out a monthlong pork discount program to help stabilize food prices, with retailers nationwide participating in the government-led initiative, the ministry announced on Sunday.

Under the plan, retailers on Sunday began selling popular cuts such as pork belly and pork neck at up to 50 percent off ahead of Samgyeopsal Day, using funds from Korea Pork — a joint brand that Korean pig farmers operate to certify and promote domestically produced pork while maintaining quality standards across the industry.

A total of 516 Korea Pork-certified restaurants and butcher shops nationwide will also offer discounts on menu items through nearly the end of March, cutting prices by up to 5,000 won ($3.4) or up to 500 won per 100 grams (0.2 pounds).

As part of food price stabilization, the ministry will also import fresh eggs and eggs for raising chickens to help prevent shortages before demand for chicken and eggs rises during peak season.
