Korea's state-run arms procurement agency said Tuesday it has finalized a plan to upgrade the amphibious assault ship ROKS Dokdo with a new combat system and radar for enhanced defense capabilities.

Under the plan endorsed on Thursday, the 14,000-ton vessel will be equipped with an advanced combat system and software meant to make the ship's operation of anti-ship missiles and anti-aircraft artillery more effective, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

The plan also includes replacing the ship's Dutch-developed radar with a homegrown fixed multipurpose Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and updating its infrared search and detection equipment, DAPA said.

The ROKS Dokdo, which has mostly been deployed for transportation of troops and equipment, was delivered to the Navy in 2007.
