One person died and two were injured after a tree collapsed on Mount Seorak in Gangwon, where a strong wind alert had been issued.
Fire authorities received a report at 8:41 a.m. on Wednesday about people trapped under a fallen tree, according to the Gangwon State Fire Headquarters.
A man in his 60s was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest but later died. Two other hikers, in their 50s and 60s, suffered injuries.
Fire authorities suspect that a decayed oak tree fell on the hikers and are currently investigating the incident.
A strong wind warning was issued in parts of Gangwon on Wednesday. This warning is issued when wind speeds are expected to exceed 75.6 kilometers per hour (47 miles per hour) or when instantaneous wind velocities surpass 93.6 kilometers per hour.
Thursday is expected to bring warmer weather compared to Wednesday, with daytime highs nationwide between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius (64 and 73 degrees Fahrenheit), which is 2 to 4 degrees higher than Wednesday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
