Lee Sang-deuk, brother of former President Lee Myung-bak, dies at 89

Lee Sang-deuk, the older brother of former President Lee Myung-bak, died Wednesday at the age of 89. 
 
Lee, a former National Assembly vice speaker, passed away while hospitalized at Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno District, central Seoul, due to a chronic illness. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The funeral parlor has been set up at Asan Medical Center in Songpa District, southern Seoul. The funeral procession will take place at Somang Church in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, on Saturday.
 
Born in 1935 in Osaka, Japan, Lee was first elected as a conservative representative in the National Assembly in 1988. He was re-elected five consecutive times.
 
In December 2011, illegal political funds were discovered to have been managed through an account under the name of Lee’s secretary.
 
As the first sitting president's brother to face such charges, Lee was arrested in July 2012 for violating the Political Funds Act, was sentenced to prison and released in September 2013.
