Incheon International Airport Corporation unveiled plans to set aside a separate gate for celebrities, resulting in immediate backlash from onlookers.
The corporation sent official letters to entertainment agencies on Wednesday, urging them to use the exclusive celebrity gate for departures, according to local media.
“To minimize crowds and potential safety hazards, we have established a new procedure allowing celebrities and other public figures to use a designated gate at Incheon Airport's departure area starting Oct. 28,” the corporation said in the letter.
“We are not constructing a new gate but will provide access to existing gates used by flight attendants and pilots,” the corporation added.
The decision comes amid increasing concerns about the large crowds that often accompany celebrities at the airport, causing disruptions and safety risks for other passengers.
The announcement, however, sparked a heated debate online, with some netizens supporting the new policy as a measure to mitigate potential risks and others criticizing it as preferential treatment for celebrities, according to the local news outlet YTN.
In July, actor Byeon Woo-seok came under fire after his private security guards blocked airport gates, flashed lights at passengers and conducted unauthorized ticket and passport checks for the sake of protecting the actor.
