President Yoon Suk Yeol said that North Korea will face the end of its regime if it attempts to use nuclear weapons in an Armed Forces Day ceremony address Tuesday.

윤석열 대통령은 화요일 (10월 1일) 국군의 날 기념식 연설에서 북한이 핵무기 사용을 기도하면 정권 종말의 날이 될 것이라고 경고했다.

“If North Korea attempts to use nuclear weapons, it will face the resolute and overwhelming response of our military and the ROK-U.S. alliance, ” Yoon said, referring to the acronym for South Korea’s official name, the Republic of Korea. “That day will be the end of the North Korean regime.” Yoon gave the address in a ceremony marking the 76th Armed Forces Day held at the Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi.

윤 대통령은 “북한이 핵무기 사용을 기도한다면, 우리 군과 한미동맹의 결연하고 압도적인 대응에 직면하게 될 것”이라며 “그날이 바로 북한 정권 종말의 날”이라고 말하면서 이때 한국의 영문 국호(Republic of Korea) 약어를 언급했다. 윤 대통령은 경기도 성남 서울공항에서 열린 건군 76주년 국군의 날 기념식에서 연설했다.

Noting that the North Korean regime “continues to insist on a path of regression and downfall,” Yoon said it only pursues “hereditary power succession, turning a blind eye to the miserable lives of their people and threatening us with nuclear weapons and missiles.”

윤 대통령은 “북한 정권은 여전히 퇴행과 몰락의 길을 고집하고 있다”면서 “오직 권력 세습만을 추구하며, 주민들의 참담한 삶은 외면한 채 핵과 미사일로 우리를 위협하고 있다”고 말했다.

Yoon said Pyongyang has committed “despicable types of provocations like sending trash balloons and GPS jamming attacks” and “now gone so far as to claim a ‘two hostile states’ theory, even denying the possibility of reunification.” He also said North Korea has been engaging in illegal arms deals with Russia, defying international norms.

윤 대통령은 “쓰레기 풍선, GPS 교란 공격과 같은 저열한 도발을 자행하더니, 급기야 ‘적대적 두 국가론’을 주장하며 통일마저 부정하고 있다”고 말했다. 또 러시아와의 불법 무기 거래로 국제사회의 규범에 역행한다고 덧붙였다.

“Our military will immediately retaliate against North Korea’s provocations based on its robust combat capabilities and solid readiness posture,” Yoon added, calling on Pyongyang to “abandon the delusion that nuclear weapons will protect them.”

윤 대통령은 “우리 군은 강력한 전투역량과 확고한 대비 태세를 바탕으로 북한의 도발을 즉각 응징할 것”이라고 말하며 북한 정권은 “핵무기가 자신을 지켜준다는 망상에서 벗어나야 할 것”이라고 했다

Last month, North Korea made a rare disclosure of its secretive uranium enrichment facility, in addition to sending more rounds of trash-laden balloons to the South.

According to the Defense Ministry, some 5,300 troops and 340 pieces of military equipment were mobilized for the Armed Forces Day ceremony, which was an opportunity for South Korea to show off its newest weapons.

국방부에 따르면 국군의 날 기념식에는 병력 5300여명과 군 장비 340여대가 동원돼 한국이 최신 무기를 과시할 기회였다.

The South Korean military showcased its secretive Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile, capable of delivering powerful retaliatory strikes against North Korea, on two transporter erector launchers for the first time during the ceremony.
