The country’s two largest automakers on Monday formed a committee with the Ministry of Employment and Labor dedicated to strengthening cooperation with subcontractors.
The establishment is meaningful as subcontractors like auto parts makers are struggling with poor working conditions and low income, Hyundai and Kia said.
The government will support both sides to make the promises become a reality.
The committee will develop specific supportive measures by the end of January 2024.
“On the journey to make Hyundai and Kia the world’s top three automakers, there were efforts made by our employees but also our subcontractors, who have walked beside us,” said Lee Dong-seock, co-CEO of Hyundai Motor. “Hyundai Motor will accompany them so that workers in the auto industry can work without worries, based on stable welfare.”
Similar agreements were signed between manufacturers and subcontractors in the shipbuilding industry in February and the petrochemical industry in September.
