The Korean men’s basketball team beat Qatar 76-64 in their second group stage game at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Thursday, recording a second consecutive win in the tournament and topping Group D.
The game at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China was neck-and-neck in the early going, with both sides scoring multiple points.
Korea then pulled ahead from 7-7 and began to extend their lead, ending the first quarter up 22-13.
Korea missed multiple 3-pointers and allowed Qatar to narrow the score gap during the second quarter, but still managed to keep the lead with Rah Gun-ah’s good performance to end the quarter at 43-29.
With an over 10-point lead, Korea played the third quarter with less pressure and further stretched the lead to make it 67-47 by the end of the quarter, before sealing a 76-64 victory.
A total of 16 teams, divided into four groups, are competing in this year’s Asiad, with the top two teams from each group reaching the knockout stage.
Korea is in Group D of the tournament alongside Qatar, Indonesia and Japan. Korea will next face Japan at the same venue on Saturday.
If the Korean men’s basketball team win this year, it will be their fifth Asiad gold. The last time they topped the podium was in 2014, when they won gold after a victory over Iran in the final.
