The art of getting into a sold-out ‘Do Ho Suh’ exhibition at MMCA

The wildly popular exhibition sells out nearly immediately every Monday. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck.

Visitors who miss out on online bookings for the sold-out “Do Ho Suh” exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) Seoul can still get in with the museum’s 10,000 won ($7.40) integrated ticket, also referred to as the All Pass.

More than a month has passed since the exhibition opened to immense enthusiasm, but tickets still sell out online almost immediately every Monday, when bookings for the following week open. Lines continue to form outside the museum each morning as visitors seek out tickets available at the museum.

Competition for the All Pass, which is sold by time slot, remains comparatively light.

The MMCA sells two types of admission. Individual tickets for a certain show are priced by exhibition and range from free admission to 8,000 won; the “Do Ho Suh” show itself costs 8,000 won.

The integrated ticket covers all paid exhibitions at the Seoul branch, but it is sold only when three or more paid shows are running, excluding performance programs. Integrated tickets are currently on sale at MMCA Seoul.

It is sold by time slot, which sets only when visitors enter the museum, and there is no limit on how long they can stay once inside.

Both types of tickets are booked through the MMCA’s online reservation system. Slots for the following Monday-to-Sunday week open every Monday at 6 p.m., and each person can book up to four tickets.

The integrated ticket is not the only way past a sellout.

A sold-out notice online does not mean the day is fully booked: The MMCA sells same-day on-site tickets from a separate quota on a first come, first served basis by time slot. Visitors buying on site cannot choose their slot, and sales close early once each slot's allocation runs out. Cancelled tickets for sold-out slots are released back online in real time.

Some visitors can attend for free, depending on the day. Admission is free during the Wednesday and Saturday night openings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Culture Day, which falls on the last Wednesday of each month. Visitors still need to acquire a ticket to enter.
