Missing teen found dead after being swept out to sea in Goseong

A high school student who went missing at Chodo Beach in Goseong County, Gangwon, was found dead four days after the incident.

The teen had been missing since Sunday after being swept away while swimming at the beach.

A report was received at around 12:24 p.m. on Wednesday that a body had been spotted among seaweed near Chodo Beach, according to fire authorities the same day.

Authorities, including the Coast Guard, later confirmed the body was that of an 18-year-old from Gwangju, who had gone missing in the area three days earlier.

The Sokcho Coast Guard had received a report at around 9:40 a.m. on Sunday that the teenager had been swept out to sea while swimming at Chodo Beach.

The teenager had reportedly traveled to Goseong County over the weekend with three friends to participate in a street basketball tournament.

Two of the four friends were at a convenience store at the time of the incident, while the victim and another friend entered the water, according to the Coast Guard. The friend made it back to shore safely, but the victim was swept away and went missing.

Following the incident, the Coast Guard launched a search operation with support from firefighters, military personnel, local government officials and residents. Search efforts were reportedly hampered by high waves and strong winds along the east coast.
