Boy band Astro’s Yoon San-ha has been selected as the K-pop artist best suited to play the main character in a webtoon, according to fan-voting platform Picnic.

In K-pop fandom, when an artist is suited to play a character in a webtoon, it means the artist has distinctive visuals, personality and overall vibe.

In the poll, which ran from Aug. 26 through Sept. 9, Yoon came in first with 25,183 votes. Yejun, leader of virtual idol group Plave, ranked second with 24,300 votes, followed by Stray Kids’ Hyunjin with 18,807 votes.

Picnic attributed Yoon’s selection in part to his image transformation over the 10 years since his debut, from Astro’s bright and cute maknae (youngest member) to a calmer and more mature artist.

Yoon made his debut in 2016 as Astro’s youngest member and became known for his bright and youthful image. Now in his 10th year since his debut, he has been expanding his musical identity as a solo artist, highlighting his vocals and performance skills, according to Picnic.

In May, Yoon released his third EP, “No Reason.” He held a solo fan concert, “Just, No Reason,” in Seoul in July, followed by a performance in Tokyo on Aug. 16.

“Although he spent years as the youngest member of Astro, his solo albums and performances have added a calmer and more mature side to his image,” a spokesperson for Picnic said. “His tall stature, defined features and restrained expressions onstage have also contributed to the character fans associate with him.”

Picnic also added that K-pop fans build their own narratives around artists based on details accumulated through their stage expressions and styling.

“K-pop fans these days connect artists with strong character traits to characters from content they enjoy, creating new images around them,” Picnic added.

Picnic hosts weekly polls on a wide range of K-pop topics in collaboration with the Korea JoongAng Daily.
