LG Innotek has launched its own fleet of vehicles to collect autonomous driving sensor data on Korean roads.

The company's sensing modules will also be installed on the fleet of vehicles operated by U.S. autonomous driving software company Applied Intuition.

LG Innotek and Applied Intuition signed a strategic partnership in March to advance sensing solutions for autonomous driving.

LG Innotek’s vehicles will operate mainly in the greater Seoul area, including Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi. The company plans to expand its fleet to about 20 vehicles by 2028, including vehicles for data collection and autonomous driving software development.

The move aims to improve the performance of LG Innotek's camera, radar and light detection and ranging sensors, which serve as the eyes of autonomous vehicles, using data gathered under real-world road conditions.

LG Innotek plans to use fleet data to accelerate its push into the autonomous driving sensing market. It aims to win new customers in North America and Europe with integrated sensing solutions that cover vehicle cameras, radar and LiDAR.

Applied Intuition's data-collection vehicles fitted with LG Innotek sensing modules will also operate in the United States, Europe and Japan. LG Innotek plans to analyze the large volume of real-world data to identify weak points across different environments early and address them in advance to get the most out of its modules.

"Autonomous driving solutions are evolving from improving the performance of individual sensors to optimizing sensors and software together based on data," said John Min, LG Innotek’s chief technology officer. "We will quickly take the lead in the physical AI sensing market, including autonomous driving, with LG Innotek's integrated sensing solutions, which have been further refined through data."
