Huons Group is set to bolster its competitiveness by going beyond a mere overhaul of subsidiaries, with a management shake-up and internal consolidation focusing on the core capabilities of its bio and pharmaceutical sectors, while efficiently reorganizing its internal finance resources.

The group is integrating all stages of research and development (R&D) in the medical industry, from production to distribution, to counter shifting global market dynamics. Driven by back-to-back successive mergers and buyouts, Huons Group’s strategy paid off as its earnings maintained an upswing.

The group’s core subsidiary, Huons, launched a structural reorganization last year by spinning off its health supplements business to create Huons N, internalizing the production with the integration of the subsidiary Biorosette.

In April, Huons absorption a wholly owned subsidiary, HuonsLifeSciences, a complete pharmaceutical manufacturing and sales company that was acquired in 2023.

Huonslab, an R&D-driven company equipped with peptide-based biopharmaceutical technology, is also restructuring with the integration of a group affiliate to further solidify its growth foundation by adding biopharmaceutical capabilities.

The group also laid the groundwork for upgrading its capabilities in March by forging an alliance with pharmaceutical giants and establishing a vaccine division, going on to secure five different types of vaccines as the company diversified its business portfolio.

With a strategy of “selection and focus,” Huons Group is pushing to make a standalone dietary supplement unit a core growth driver with the consolidation of R&D and production operations to sharpen decision-making and optimize cost structures.

In the vaccine sector, meanwhile, Huons is expanding through structural reshoring to keep pace with changes in the external environment, which positions refined production and efficient R&D prowess as key national priorities.

Huons sees the latest mergers as a necessary gambit, leveraging both structural and R&D capabilities to secure a competitive edge against drug pricing policy, with a recent policy paper highlighting the benefits of Innovative Pharmaceutical Company Certification. The designation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare grants drug pricing benefits of 47 to 49 percent for existing reproductions and 50 to 60 percent for new reproductions.

To unlock the criteria to meet the “innovation” standard, the key criterion for the designation, a shift from conventional generic-focused chemical drugs to the incorporation of bio-platforms and pipelines is viewed as a distinct advantage.

For Huons Group, a merger between Huonlab and Huons has become imperative. Notably, Huonslab boasts cutting-edge platform technologies utilizing human-derived hyaluronidase. Without immediate revenue streams and with regulations on dual listings impeding an initial public offering, attracting external investment has become a daunting task for Huonslab. However, the consolidation with the group’s core subsidiary offers a crucial breakthrough by securing stable funding for its future operations.

The merger of the two entities is a demonstration of Huons Group’s push to lay a foundation for critical milestones for future growth. The holding company as well as the affiliates established a committee to carry out an independent review, with Huons Global set to seek shareholder opinions and approval on the move through an extraordinary general meeting next month. Ahead of this, Huons Global has proposed a shareholder return plan to pay out a dividend in kind to minority shareholders.

Such latest measures by Huons Group are interpreted as a strategic effort to lay the groundwork for long-term sustainable growth. With this potential synergy, Huons Group staging a return to the center of the biopharmaceutical sector.
