'Mijo,' not 'ni hao': Fan accused of shouting racist remarks at Sonny speaks up

손흥민 인종차별 의혹에 현지 팬 반박… '니하오' 아닌 '미호'

Korea JoongAng Daily 6면 기사

Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026

The alleged “ni hao” taunt towards Korean football star Son Heung-min was an affectionate chant lost in translation from Spanish, according to the fan who had been accused of harassing the superstar footballer.

taunt: 조롱, 야유
affectionate: 애정 어린
harass: 괴롭히다

손흥민을 향해 '니하오'라고 조롱했다는 의혹을 받은 팬이 해명을 내놨다. 인종차별적 발언이 아닌,  스페인어로 애정을 담아 외친 응원이 잘못 전달된 것이라는 내용이다.

“I’m getting tagged and sent messages from all sorts of different platforms claiming I was yelling out racial slurs when that is in fact not true,” wrote the fan in an online post.

racial slur: 인종차별적 욕설

이 팬은 온라인 게시글에서 "여러 플랫폼에서 내가 인종차별적 욕설을 외쳤다며 태그와 메시지가 쏟아지고 있지만 이는 사실이 아니다"라고 밝혔다.

The fan, who explained himself as “the guy with the big hat that sits in the front row,” went viral after a video of him shouting what a user claimed sounded like “ni hao,” Mandarin for hello and often used in a racist context, was posted on Monday after the Sunday game.

go viral: (온라인에서) 화제가 되다

자신을 "맨 앞줄에 앉는 큰 모자 쓴 남자"라고 소개한 이 팬은 일요일 경기 다음 날인 월요일 한 이용자가 올린 영상으로 화제가 됐다. 이 이용자는 영상 속 팬이 '니하오'라고 외쳤다고 주장했다. '니하오'는 중국어로 '안녕하세요'라는 뜻이지만 인종차별적 맥락에서 자주 쓰인다.

“This man straight up yelled nihao nihao at Sonny when he circled the field to thank the fans after the game,” the user who posted the video wrote on X.

straight up: 대놓고
circle ~: ~을 한 바퀴 돌다

영상을 올린 이용자는 X(구 트위터)에 "이 남자가 경기 뒤 팬들에게 인사하려고 그라운드를 돌던 쏘니에게 대놓고 '니하오, 니하오'라고 외쳤다"고 적었다.

A report by the New York Post noted that other LAFC fans recognized the man who shouted the remarks because he is a regular attendee of LAFC matches. The footage also shows Son looking toward the spectator.

regular attendee: 단골 관중
spectator: 관중

뉴욕포스트는 다른 LAFC 팬들이 이 남성을 알아봤다고 보도했다. LAFC 경기를 꾸준히 찾는 단골 관중이라는 것이다. 영상에는 손흥민이 이 관중 쪽을 바라보는 모습도 담겼다.

However, what he meant was far from derogatory but an expression of affection, according to the new explanatory post.

derogatory: 경멸적인, 비하하는
explanatory: 설명의, 해명의

하지만 이 팬이 올린 해명 글에 따르면 그가 외친 말은 비하와는 거리가 먼 애정의 표현이었다.

“I yelled out his name in Spanish, which is ‘Mijo,’” said the post. “There was another fan next to me who thought I yelled out Ni hao, which means hello in Mandarin. When she asked me if I said that, I said no, as I actually didn’t even know what that meant or what she was talking about.”

yell out: 큰 소리로 외치다

그는 "스페인어로 손흥민의 이름인 '미호'를 외쳤다"며 "옆에 있던 다른 팬이 내가 중국어로 '안녕'이라는 뜻의 '니하오'를 외쳤다고 생각했다. 그 팬이 그렇게 말했느냐고 묻길래 아니라고 했다. 사실 니하오가 무슨 뜻인지, 무슨 얘기를 하는 건지 조차 몰랐다"고 했다.

“Mijo” is a colloquial Spanish contraction of “mi hijo,” meaning “my son.” The nickname is an affectionate twist on the word “son” and the Korean player’s last name, Son.

colloquial: 구어체의
contraction: 축약형
twist: (말의) 변형, 비틀기

'미호'는 '내 아들'이라는 뜻의 스페인어 '미 이호(mi hijo)'를 줄인 구어 표현이다. 영어로 '아들'을 뜻하는 ‘son’과 손흥민의 성 '손(Son)'을 엮은 애칭인 셈이다.

“I literally thought she was going to compliment me on speaking Korean,” the fan wrote.

compliment ~ on: ~을 칭찬하다

그는 "그 팬이 내가 한국어를 한다고 칭찬해 주는 줄 알았다"고 적었다.

The backlash hit close to home.

backlash: 반발, 역풍

이번 논란은 이 팬에게 적잖은 상처가 됐다.

“I’ve been a season ticket holder since day 1, I travel to see our team play at away stadiums,” the social media post said. “I have love and passion for this team and to have my name dragged in the dirt like this is not cool.”

season ticket holder: 시즌권 소지자
drag one’s name in the dirt: 이름에 먹칠하다

그는 "창단 첫날부터 시즌권을 갖고 있었고, 원정 경기장까지 따라가 응원한다"며 "이 팀에 애정과 열정을 갖고 있는데 이렇게 내 이름에 먹칠을 당하는 건 정말 기분이 나쁘다"라고 했다.

He has reached out to the LAFC’s front office and is waiting for a response, according to the social media post.

reach out to: ~에 연락하다

그가 소셜 미디어에 올린 글에 따르면 그는 LAFC 구단 측에 연락을 취했으며 답변을 기다리고 있다.
