Press conference must signal change, not just communication (KOR)

President Lee Jae Myung will hold a press conference on Friday as his approval ratings decline. The presidential office says he will answer questions without restriction on major issues. But simply opening another channel of communication will not be enough to win back public confidence. A Korea Society Opinion Institute poll released Wednesday showed negative assessments exceeding positive ones across every age group, including people in their 40s and 50s, traditionally strong supporters of the governing camp. The president needs to reflect clearly on the overall direction of his administration.

First, Lee must settle controversies involving his own legal risks: calls to drop criminal cases against him and proposals for a constitutional amendment that could allow him to seek another term. Both issues have been cited as political burdens even within the ruling camp. Because they directly concern the president himself, he should end the controversy by clearly stating that efforts to cancel the prosecutions will be abandoned and that he will not seek another term under any circumstances.

Reversing unconventional moves that risk disrupting the judicial and constitutional order would be the minimum starting point for restoring trust and reversing the decline in support.

Lee should also apologize for housing policies that have failed to reflect the realities ordinary people face and present corrective measures. The government has continued to invoke the need to curb speculation even as tax pressure on owners of single homes they do not occupy and other measures have distorted the market, worsening difficulties for jeonse, or lump-sum key money leases, and monthly rentals. Unless the administration shows how it will correct policy mistakes, discontent among young people and the middle class will persist.

Decisive action is also needed over personnel choices. The sincerity of the press conference will be undermined if the administration pushes ahead with nominees who have prompted public criticism. In particular, Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won should withdraw or have his nomination revoked over controversy surrounding inappropriate requests. Using an insubstantial confirmation hearing as justification to appoint him anyway would only deepen public discontent.

Lee has pursued a hands-on governing style, personally overseeing matters across the administration. As a result, presidential views have sometimes become guidelines, weakening rigorous policy scrutiny and producing measures detached from people's daily lives.

The public is sending a strong signal that it wants an apology for misguided policies and tangible change. If the president uses the press conference merely to defend the existing course rather than address those concerns, holding it will serve little purpose.

공소취소·연임 논란 끝내고 변화 밝혀야 회견 의미 있다

이재명 대통령이 국정 운영 지지율 하락세 속에 18일 기자회견을 열기로 했다. 국정 현안에 대해 제한 없이 답변하겠다고 하나, 소통의 장을 여는 것만으로는 민심을 되돌리기 어렵다. 한국사회여론연구소가 어제 발표한 여론조사에선 여권에 강한 지지를 보내던 40~50대까지 모든 연령대에서 부정 평가가 긍정 평가를 웃돌았다. 민심이 등을 돌린 국정 기조 전반에 대한 분명한 성찰이 필요한 상황이다.

가장 먼저 정리해야 할 사안은 대통령 본인의 사법리스크와 관련된 공소취소와 연임 개헌 논란이다. 공소취소 추진을 둘러싼 잡음과 연임용 개헌 추진에 대한 의구심은 야당은 물론 여당 내에서조차 국정 부담 요인으로 지적돼 왔다. 대통령 본인의 신상과 직결된 사안인 만큼 공소취소 추진 포기와 어떠한 경우에도 연임이 없다는 명확한 입장을 표명해 논란을 끝내야 한다. 사법·헌정 질서를 뒤흔드는 아집과 독선을 거둬내는 것은 지지율 반등을 위한 최소한의 출발점이다.

국민의 현실적 삶을 헤아리지 못한 부동산 정책 실패에 대해서도 사과하고 보완책을 제시해야 한다. 비거주 1주택자에 대한 세제 압박 등으로 전월세난 등 시장 왜곡을 초래하고도 정부는 투기 근절이라는 당위만 내세워 왔다. 명백한 무능과 정책 오판을 어떻게 시정할지 보여주지 못하면 지금 나타나는 청년층과 중산층의 반발을 잠재우지 못할 것이다.

인사 실패에 대한 결단도 필요하다. 자격 미달 장관 후보자들을 내놓아 공분을 사놓고도 인선을 강행하려 한다면 회견의 진정성은 사라질 것이다. 특히 부적절한 청탁으로 물의를 빚은 김승원 법무부 장관 후보자부터 자진 사퇴시키거나 지명을 철회하는 과감한 조치가 필요하다. 행여 ‘맹탕 청문회’를 근거로 임명을 강행하려 드는 것은 민심 이반에 기름을 붓는 격이 될 것이다.

이 대통령은 그동안 모든 사안을 직접 챙기는 만기친람형 국정 운영 방식을 보여 왔다. 그로 인해  대통령의 입장이 가이드라인이 되면서 치밀한 검증은 사라지고 국민의 생활과 동떨어진 정책이 민생을 나락으로 몰고 가곤 했다. 지금 국민들은 잘못된 국정 기조에 대한 진실한 사과와 확실한 변화를 원한다는 신호를 강렬하게 보내고 있다. 그런데도 대통령이 딴소리를 할 거라면 회견은 하나 마나다.
