At the end of BabyMonster’s July 11 performance of “I Like It” on a weekly music show, the camera moved in for an unforgiving close-up of Asa for her “ending fairy” moment.

Wearing a purple-and-yellow dress with a matching hairpin, she looked directly into the lens as her shoulders rose and fell slightly, her warm hazel eyes polished to near-impossible perfection.

And that too-good-to-be-true glow was not merely a trick of the lighting — it had been designed into her eyes themselves.

Dayoon, a senior makeup artist at Oui Oui Atelier who currently works with K-pop acts such as BabyMonster, IVE, fromis_9 and more, is among the people behind the scenes who carefully constructed that exact moment.

“Colored contact lenses are crucial elements that bring out the makeup and styling,” the veteran makeup artist told the Korea JoongAng Daily, explaining that she selects colored contact lenses by considering not only an idol’s eye makeup but also the colors and overall concept of the outfits worn onstage.

“Especially onstage, lenses can make the shape of the eyes appear more defined or add a focal point to the overall look through their glow,” Dayoon said.

And that glow is itself the product of careful design: an illusion intended to make light appear permanently reflected in the wearer’s eyes — an optical innovation driven by the unforgiving digital mediascape and the increasingly elaborate aesthetic architecture of K-pop branding.

“The most noticeable trend among idol lenses this year has 100 percent been weighted highlight lenses,” a Korean lens enthusiast who wished to be identified by their social media account, Idol_eotd, told the Korea JoongAng Daily.

The account identifies certain contact lenses used by K-pop idols based on photos and shares the information online, with a combined following of around 28,000 across X and Instagram.

The “weighted highlight lenses,” also known as axis-stabilized highlight lenses, are designed to keep a printed highlight in a fixed position even as the wearer blinks or moves their eyes.

‘축 고정 하이라이트 렌즈’로도 불리는 ‘무게 중심 하이라이트 렌즈’는 착용자가 눈을 깜빡이거나 눈동자를 움직여도 인쇄된 하이라이트가 고정된 위치를 유지하도록 설계됐다.
Contact lenses have been part of Korean beauty culture since the early 2000s, but highlight lenses — featuring bright crescents or gradients that create a permanent-looking glow within the iris — began gaining popularity in the early 2020s.

콘택트렌즈는 2000년대 초반부터 한국의 미용 문화에서 한 부분을 차지해 왔다. 그러나 홍채 안에 은은한 빛이 계속 머무는 듯한 효과를 내는 밝은 초승달 무늬나 그라데이션이 특징인 하이라이트 렌즈가 본격적으로 인기를 얻기 시작한 것은 2020년대 초반부터다.
But these lenses could rotate on the eye, causing the printed highlight to shift into an unnatural position, which is where the weighted lens comes in.

하지만 이런 렌즈는 눈 위에서 회전할 수 있어 인쇄된 하이라이트가 부자연스러운 위치로 돌아갈 수 있는데, 바로 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 축고정 렌즈가 등장했다.
The stabilizing technology of weighted lenses was originally developed to correct astigmatism. Weighted cosmetic lenses, which have a thicker lower section that prevents the printed highlight from rotating on the eyes, began entering the market in late 2024 and have gained popularity among K-pop idols over the past year.
