Is protecting the president from prosecution the top priority? (KOR)

The Democratic Party (DP) has formally announced plans to pursue a parliamentary investigation into Chief Justice Jo Hee-de and special counsel legislation targeting allegedly fabricated indictments.

Park Sung-joon, the DP's chief spokesperson, said Monday that investigating Jo and passing the special counsel bill would be major priorities after the National Assembly's annual audit. Party floor leaders have reportedly reviewed the necessary procedures.

The move appears intended to revive calls for Jo's impeachment following Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon's acquittal on appeal in a political funding case involving allegations that another person paid for opinion polls conducted by political broker Myung Tae-kyun.

The party also appears determined to push legislation investigating allegedly fabricated prosecutions, including cases involving President Lee Jae Myung.

It is deeply troubling that the ruling party invokes a "judicial cartel" and threatens to remove the chief justice whenever court rulings disappoint it. Using its legislative majority to intimidate the judiciary's leader seriously undermines constitutional separation of powers and judicial independence.

The DP also appears ready to force through the special counsel bill under the banner of judicial and prosecutorial reform.

Reps. Park Kyoon-taek and Yang Bu-nam, both associated with a parliamentary group seeking dismissal of charges against the president, are reportedly leading candidates for justice minister, a position vacant for two months.

Both have prominently defended Lee against legal allegations, including those arising from the Daejang-dong development scandal. Considering such figures to lead the Justice Ministry inevitably raises questions about investigative fairness and political neutrality.

Although some opinion polls suggest a modest rebound, the president's approval rating remains low. The DP's support has reportedly declined below that of the opposition People Power Party.

Meanwhile, the administration has failed to address housing policies, cited as the leading reason for negative evaluations of its performance. Renters without homes face mounting difficulties amid soaring jeonse and monthly rental costs.

Small business owners and the self-employed are also struggling under persistently high prices and interest rates.

Citizens facing these pressures want practical measures to improve their livelihoods and a change in misguided policy priorities.

Instead, the ruling camp appears increasingly focused on impeaching the chief justice and securing dismissal of criminal charges against the president, effectively making protection from legal accountability its overriding priority.

Such political maneuvering risks further eroding public confidence in the government and the institutions responsible for upholding the rule of law.

If the administration continues prioritizing the president's legal troubles over citizens' everyday hardships, public disillusionment will only deepen.

대법원장 겁박, 대통령 공소취소가 국정 1순위인가

더불어민주당이 조희대 대법원장에 대한 국회 국정조사와 조작기소 특검법 추진을 공식화했다. 박성준 민주당 수석대변인은 어제 “조 대법원장 국정조사와 조작기소 특검법이 국감 이후 민주당이 추진해야 될 매우 큰 과제”라고 했다. 이미 당 원내지도부에서 세부 절차를 검토했다고 한다.

오세훈 서울시장의 ‘명태균 여론조사 대납’ 의혹 사건 항소심 무죄 판결을 빌미 삼아 당 일각에서 여론 몰이해 온 대법원장 탄핵 카드를 다시 꺼내 들고, 여기에 편승해 이재명 대통령 기소 사건 등에 대한 조작기소 특검법안도 밀어붙이겠다는 의도로 보인다.

집권여당이 자신들이 원하는 판결이 안 나왔다고 ‘사법 카르텔’을 거론하며 대법원장 탓을 하고 힘으로 끌어내겠다고 하니 우려를 금할 수 없다. 다수의 입법 권력을 앞세워 사법부 수장을 겁박하는 것은 헌법이 정한 삼권분립과 사법부 독립의 원칙을 심각하게 훼손하는 일이다.

민주당은 사법·검찰 개혁이란 포장으로 조작기소 특검법도 강행할 태세다. 두 달째 공석인 법무부 장관 후보자로 ‘대통령 사건 공소취소 모임’ 출신인 박균택·양부남 의원이 유력하게 검토되고 있다고도 한다. 대장동 사건 등 이 대통령 사법 리스크 대응에 앞장서 대표적인 ‘사법 호위무사’로 알려진 이들을 법치 행정의 수장으로 고려한다니 수사의 공정성과 정치적 중립성이 의심받을 수밖에 없다.

일부 여론조사에서 반등 조짐이 나타나긴 했지만 대통령 지지율은 여전히 바닥권이다. 민주당 지지율도 국민의힘에 추월당하며 하락세를 면치 못하는 것으로 나온다. 국정 부정 평가 1순위로 꼽히는 부동산 정책의 실패가 바로잡히지 않는 사이 전월세 대란에 내몰린 무주택자들의 시름은 깊어지고, 고물가·고금리의 직격탄을 맞은 소상공인·자영업자들은 고통이 가중되고 있다.

삶이 팍팍한 국민은 실질적인 민생 대책과 잘못된 정책 기조의 전환을 원하고 있다. 그런데 집권 세력은 국민의 신음에는 귀를 닫은 채 대법원장 탄핵과 대통령 공소취소라는 ‘사법 방탄’을 국정 1순위로 놓고 올인하는 듯한 모습이다. 국민 삶을 보듬는 일을 뒤로 미룬 채 사법 리스크 해소에만 매달린다면 민심 이반은 더욱 커질 수밖에 없을 것이다.
