Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love” won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival on Saturday, in a celebrated return for the filmmaker 24 years after he won best director for “Oasis” (2002).

The award was decided by a jury led by U.S. actor and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal, which gave the Golden Lion, the festival’s top prize, to May El-Toukhy’s “Woman Unknown.”

Lee said at a press conference after the ceremony that he was first inspired to make the film more than a decade ago after seeing how a wave of mass layoffs at a major Korean conglomerate had lasting repercussions for workers and society, an event he described as “shocking.”
