“Reddy has been admitted.”

admit: (병원에) 입원시키다, 인정하다

“레디 입원했습니다.”

The message arrived along with a photograph of 13-year-old Reddy taken inside her “hospital room,” shortly after she consulted with “doctor” Titi Kim.

consult with: 상담하다, 상의하다

13살 레디가 ‘의사’ 티티 김에게 진찰을 받은 지 얼마 지나지 않아, ‘병실’에 있는 레디의 사진과 함께 이 메시지가 도착했다.

Despite concerns, Kim had pronounced her condition “very minor.”

pronounce: 표명하다, 발표하다

condition: 상태

걱정과는 달리, 김 씨는 레디의 상태가 “매우 경미하다”고 진단했다.

It was a fair assessment, after witnessing patients in considerably worse shape. Some were missing eyes. Others had ears bitten off. One had much of his back torn open.

상태가 훨씬 심각한 환자들을 보고 나니 충분히 납득이 가는 진단이었다. 눈이 없거나 귀가 물어뜯긴 환자도 있었고, 등 대부분이 찢어져 속이 훤히 드러난 환자도 있었다.

“He's a critical patient,” Kim said, pointing to a badly wounded dinosaur doll. “His guardian's grandmother had been sewing him back together, but eventually she couldn't do it anymore.”

“이 아이는 중환자예요.” 김 씨가 심하게 손상된 공룡 인형을 가리키며 말했다. “보호자분의 할머니께서 계속 꿰매 주셨는데, 결국 더 이상 손을 쓰실 수 없게 된 거죠.”

Reddy was then moved to the operating table, where the tools for her procedure were already laid out.

이후 레디는 수술에 필요한 도구들이 미리 가지런히 놓인 수술대로 옮겨졌다.

But she was in good hands. Kim has treated hundreds of patients since opening Toytalez, a “doll hospital” in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, in 2017.

하지만 레디는 걱정할 필요가 없었다. 김 씨는 2017년 서울 강남구에 ‘인형 병원’ 토이테일즈를 연 이후 수백 명의 환자를 치료해 왔다.

Here, teddy bears, stuffed animals and other beloved companions worn down by decades of being hugged, carried and slept beside, some more than half a century old, are admitted, diagnosed and treated.

이곳에서는 수십 년간 주인의 품에 안기고, 같이 외출하고, 잠자리까지 함께하며 자며 낡고 해진 테디베어와 봉제 인형 등 소중한 친구들이 입원해 진단과 치료를 받는다. 그중에는 50년이 넘은 인형도 있다.

Some owners arrive pleading for their companions’ lives. “Please save my little sibling. I don't care how much it costs,” Kim recalled some owners saying.

어떤 보호자들은 친구를 살려 달라며 애원하기도 한다. 김 씨는 “제 동생 좀 살려 주세요. 돈이 얼마가 들어도 상관없어요”라고 말하던 보호자들도 있었다고 회상했다.

But making a doll as good as new isn't the goal here. The more difficult part is deciding what “fixed” is supposed to mean. For many owners, the answer is not “new.”

하지만 이곳의 목표는 인형을 새것처럼 만드는 것이 아니다. 더 어려운 것은 어떤 상태를 ‘고쳤다’고 볼 것인지 판단하는 일이다. 많은 보호자에게 그 답은 ‘새것' 같은 상태가 아니다.

A French customer once brought in an old mouse doll. Much of its fur had fallen out, and years of being held had left the mouse noticeably flat. Once Kim replaced its skin and added fresh stuffing, it puffed up again.

한번은 프랑스인 고객이 오래된 쥐 인형을 가져왔다. 털은 대부분 빠져 있었고, 오랫동안 품에 안고 지낸 탓에 인형은 눈에 띄게 납작해진 상태였다. 김 씨가 겉감을 교체하고 새 솜을 채워 넣자 인형은 다시 통통해졌다.

“He didn't like that,” Kim said. “We had a hard time getting it right. We had to deliberately flatten it again.”

김 씨는 “고객은 그 모습을 마음에 들어 하지 않았다”며 “원하는 모습으로 맞추기가 쉽지 않았어요. 결국 일부러 다시 납작하게 만들어야 했죠”라고 말했다.

“It can't be based on what feels right to me,” she said. “We're trying to find the feeling in that person's memory.”

 “제 기준에서 맞다고 생각하는 모습으로 고쳐서는 안 돼요. 보호자의 기억 속에 남아 있는 인형의 느낌을 찾아내려고 하는 거죠.”

That is why consultations can become remarkably detailed. Every owner has a different idea of which imperfections are damage and which are simply part of the doll they remember.

그래서 상담 과정이 매우 세세하게 진행되기도 한다. 어떤 결함을 고쳐야 할 손상으로 보고, 어떤 것을 기억 속 인형의 일부로 받아들이는지는 보호자마다 다르기 때문이다.

“You have to know exactly what that person considers important,” Kim said. “You can't make it prettier just because you think that's better. You have to do what the owner wants.”

김 씨는 “보호자가 무엇을 중요하게 생각하는지 정확히 알아야 한다”며 “제 기준에서 더 낫다고 생각해 인형을 더 예쁘게 고쳐서는 안 돼요. 보호자가 원하는 대로 해드려야 하죠”라고 말했다.
