What if the magical — if slightly spooky — world of the 2006 hit film “Night at the Museum” was not just fiction? At the National Museum of Korea, that may just be the case. Well, at least for Kwon Nam-soo, a security guard who has been with the museum for nearly a decade. “I open the door to an exhibition hall during my night shifts, and it's a little eerie,” Kwon told the Korea JoongAng Daily. He says six guards work the night in pairs until dawn.

2006년 개봉한 영화 흥행작 <박물관이 살아있다>의 마법 같은, 다소 으스스하기도 한 세계가 그저 허구만은 아니라면 어떨까. 국립중앙박물관에서는 그것이 사실일지도 모른다. 적어도 이 박물관에서 10년 가까이 일한 방호원 권남수씨에게는 그렇다. 권씨는 코리아중앙데일리 인터뷰에서 "야간 근무 때 전시실 문을 열면 좀 으스스하다"고 말했다. 야간에는 방호원 여섯 명이 둘씩 짝을 지어 동틀 때까지 근무한다는 설명을 덧붙였다.

“The older guards used to tell me: ‘We dug all of this out of tombs; we’re all in here together with the spirits.’ So you start to think about it — these are the things our ancestors used, and here I am with them. Maybe I'm with their souls.” Nothing actually stirs the way the film promises — no gold-crowned Silla Dynasty (57 B.C. to A.D. 935) king rising from his case, no 10-story stone pagoda stretching after a long night, no Pensive Bodhisattva stepping down off its plinth.

"선배 방호원들이 이런 말을 하곤 했어요. '이게 다 무덤에서 파낸 것들이니, 우리는 여기서 혼령들과 함께 있는 셈'이라고요. 그러다 보면 이런 생각이 들죠. 이건 우리 조상들이 쓰던 물건이고, 내가 지금 그것들과 함께 있구나. 어쩌면 나는 그들의 혼과 함께 있는지도 모르겠다고요." 물론 영화가 약속하는 것처럼 실제로 움직이는 것은 없다. 금관을 쓴 신라왕이 진열장에서 일어나는 일도, 10층 석탑이 긴 밤을 보낸 뒤 기지개를 켜는 일도, 반가사유상이 받침대에서 내려서는 일도 없다.

But the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan District, central Seoul, now the world’s third-biggest museum by attendance, never really closes. The visitors file out around evening and the lights come down in the galleries, yet the building runs on through the night under a duty officer who keeps watch until morning. Almost everything in the cases came out of the ground — grave goods, burial bronzes, the belongings of the long dead — and on a night round, alone in an unlit hall with the periodic beep of a sensor sounding in the distance, it is not difficult to feel that you have company.

그러나 관람객 수 기준 세계 3위 규모가 된 서울 용산구 국립중앙박물관은 사실 완전히 문을 닫는 법이 없다. 저녁 무렵 관람객이 빠져나가고 전시실의 불이 꺼져도, 건물은 아침까지 자리를 지키는 당직자 아래 밤새 돌아간다. 진열장 속 거의 모든 것이 땅에서 나온 것들이다. 부장품과 무덤에서 나온 청동기, 오래전 세상을 떠난 이들의 유품이다. 야간 순찰 중 불 꺼진 전시실에 홀로 있노라면, 멀리서 센서가 주기적으로 울리는 소리가 들려오고, 누군가와 함께 있는 듯한 느낌을 받기란 어렵지 않다.

Kwon came to the job the way most of his colleagues did — as a former career soldier. The security field tends to draw ex-military men, former athletes and people certified in close protection or with backgrounds in martial arts. He joined in 2013 at the National Museum in Cheongju and moved to Seoul in 2017. As the deputy head of the operations office, Kwon knows the National Museum of Korea building the way few visitors ever will, and so to get the full story of his experiences and wisdom from the field, this reporter followed the guard around for a day, pestering him with questions.

권씨가 이 일을 하게 된 경위는 동료 대부분과 같다. 그는 직업군인 출신이다. 방호 분야에는 군 출신이나 운동선수 출신, 경호 자격증을 갖췄거나 무술을 익힌 이들이 주로 모여든다. 그는 2013년 국립청주박물관에서 일을 시작해 2017년 서울로 옮겨왔다. 운영실 부실장인 권씨는 웬만한 관람객은 결코 알 수 없는 방식으로 국립중앙박물관 건물을 속속들이 안다. 그의 경험과 현장에서 얻은 지혜를 온전히 듣기 위해, 기자는 하루 동안 그를 따라다니며 이런저런 질문을 던졌다.

A guard’s day begins around 9 a.m. — or, on the days a night shift falls to him, the evening before — with a change into uniform a half hour prior to when the public is let in at 9:30 a.m. By then, a line has usually already formed outside. The National Museum of Korea has become an open-run destination, due in part to Netflix's animated megahit "KPop Demon Hunters" (2025), which sent fans searching for the Korean folklore and treasures the film brought to life.

방호원의 하루는 오전 9시께 시작된다. 야간 근무가 걸린 날이면 그 전날 저녁부터다. 오전 9시 30분 관람객이 입장하기 30분 전에 근무복으로 갈아입는다. 그 무렵이면 대개 건물 밖에는 이미 줄이 늘어서 있다. 국립중앙박물관은 오픈런 명소가 됐는데, 여기에는 넷플릭스 애니메이션 대흥행작 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>(2025)의 영향도 있다. 이 영화가 되살려낸 한국 설화와 유물을 찾아 팬들이 몰려든 것이다.

Nonetheless, the ritual of morning inspection must go on.  The guards unlock the iron doors of the halls one at a time; then, in pairs, they walk the galleries — not strolling but checking. It is rare, but glass cases crack overnight. A label works loose and falls to the ground. A piece tips from its holding place. A case is found standing open.

그럼에도 아침 점검이라는 의식은 이어져야 한다. 방호원들은 전시실 철문을 하나씩 연다. 그런 다음 둘씩 짝을 지어 전시실을 도는데, 한가로이 거니는 것이 아니라 하나하나 점검하는 것이다. 드문 일이지만, 밤사이 유리 진열장에 금이 가기도 한다. 명제표가 헐거워져 바닥에 떨어지기도 한다. 놓여 있던 유물이 제자리에서 기울기도 한다. 진열장이 열린 채 발견되는 일도 있다.
